Critical National Work: Florida
Help restore voting eligibility to 1.4 million Floridians* with felony convictions, add 10.4% of Florida's adult population to its voter rolls, end its policy of permanently stripping returning citizens, and impact similar draconian policies nationwide.
*except murderers and sex offenders
This project is truly a big bang for the buck. Why?
IN SHEER NUMBERS, FLORIDA DISENFRANCHISES THE MOST CITIZENS
In sheer numbers, FL disenfranchises more returning citizens than any other state—1.6 million voters. That's 1/4 of the entire nation's total citizens disenfranchised for a felony conviction.
FLORIDA HAS THE HIGHEST RATE OF FELONY DISENFRANCHISEMENT: 10.4%
While 23 states disenfranchise >5% of their population, and six disenfranchise >7.5%, Florida strips rights from 10.4% of its entire adult population.
FLORIDA HAS THE MOST SEVERE POLICY IN THE NATION
States range from allowing voting in prison (VT and ME) to allowing it upon release, or upon completion of parole or probation. But three states disenfranchise permanently, for life: in Florida, Kentucky and Iowa, voters must make an expensive, labor-intensive effort to achieve an individual pardon in order to participate again.
FLORIDA IS HUGE, AND HUGELY INFLUENTIAL
As the third largest state in the nation, with 29 electoral votes, changes in Florida impact many Congressional seats, and have a huge effect on the presidency. Its influences how other states do business, too.
How do we help? Postcards. Phonebanking. Sharing videos. Talking to people in Florida. Fundraising. Let’s think stuff up!
The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition gathered over one million signatures to get restoration on the ballot in November. The Supervisor of Election rejected the signatures of 14,000 voters who signed the petition. We’re telling them to vote early so that if their signature needs verification, they’ll have time to do it.
Second Chances is organizing two big days of phone banking. Let’s sign up to host call parties, and let’s RECRUIT others to do so, too.
October 27, 2018, in the afternoon.
Let us know if you can host a call party by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org!
Order postcards, hold a party, write in a salutation, sign-off and address, put a stamp on, and mail on or close to October 5th.
32,000 postcards. There are two phases: 16K on or close to October 5, another 16K (to a different set of people) on, or close to, October 20th.
COST (WE CAN HELP, SO ASK!)
250: $40/CARDS, $88 POSTAGE ($.35 STAMPS) 500: $56/CARDS, $175 POSTAGE
If you want help, ASK. We can probably help with the cost and if yours is a young group, we’ll support you.
ANNOUNCE that you're having a postcard party by sharing this page, or THIS POST ON FACEBOOK. Tell people to RSVP immediately—Florida voters must update their registrations BY OCTOBER 9. So these have to go out ASAP. But you can also simply order fewer postcards directly and do it yourself. Do whatever works best for you.
ASSESS how many people you can recruit. Plan on 50 per person PER 1 1/2 hrs. You will need to write CLEARLY so if that's a challenge, it'll take longer. But you're not decorating. Just writing a a salutation, a sign-off, and the address.
EMAIL us at email@example.com, and tell us how many you think you can take on. DON’T BUY THEM UNTIL YOU EMAIL US.
ONCE YOU’VE GOTTEN AN EMAIL OK, email us to say you’ve bought them.
In the subject, type the number of postcards you bought, or
If you need financial help, tell us how many you think you can do, and what you need.
We also have some stamp funders. If you need this, and this will make it easier, LET US KNOW.
Paste this text into the body of the email: "I commit to keeping this list of voters confidential and to use it for no other purpose. This email constitutes my electronic signature."
Send your email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll send you a list of names, pronto. First phase gets mailed October 5-7. Second phase: October 20th.
Please let us know when you're done!
